Tony's Introduction:
Tony Robinson: This is the Ypres Salient in Belgium. Ninety years ago during World War One it was one of the most dangerous places on the planet. More than a million men were killed or wounded within a few kilometres of this spot. In the open, even in the trenches, death was no more than a snipers bullet or an artillery shell away, which was why most of the hundreds of thousands of allied troops who served here spent as much time as they possibly could, underground.
They lived in dugouts, extensive underground bunkers with room to eat , sleep and escape the terrors of the war above. But although thousands were built along the western front, we know next to nothing about them, the men who built them, or life underground. Now though, in this Belgian cornfield, a team of archaeologists think they’ve found a dugout untouched since the end of the war, and they’re planning to excavate it.
If the team are right, then this shaft, which plunges over forty feet into the Belgian mud is the gateway to an extraordinary underground world. Down here there should be a whole complex of rooms, kitchens, sleeping quarters, an ops room, officers mess, home and security for 50 people. Exploring this underground world will be fought with danger.
Tony Pollard: Shit, that’s your worst nightmare, an underground fire.
Tony Robinson: But it could also reveal for the first time the secrets of the forgotten but brutal theatre of combat deep underground.
Peter Barton: It’s a secret war, a clandestine war, a barbaric war.
Tony Robinson: And the excavation could also rescue from anonymity the extraordinary and secretive core of elite tunnelers who waged the underground war, including these men, some of the Royal Engineers who actually built the bunker.
