Yet, lurking just below present day surface, excavations reveal the exact location of the privy lodgings and the palace moat.

1998 Series, Episode 02 - Greylake, Somerset.

The team go to the Somerset levels in search of a 4,000-year-old wooden trackway. The quickest way to get across the marshes that used to exist here in the Bronze and Iron Ages was across wooden walkways. Now the team hope to find evidence of these footbridges. Human bones suggest the possibility of a burial platform, but at the end of the three days the site's exact use remains an intriguing mystery.

The team travel to the Orcadian island of Sanday to try to find out whether four mysterious mounds there are evidence of a Viking settlement or even a Viking burial site. They find a boat shaped stone grave. This positive discovery marks a first: achieving the goal they set themselves at the beginning of the dig.

1998 Series, Episode 04 - Turkdean, Gloucestershire.

A lucky helicopter ride over strange marks in a farmer's field leads a student archaeologist to call in the team, which makes this the first live programme for the Time Team. Tony Robinson and the team return to the site of a previous dig in 1998 which unearthed a Roman villa in the Cotswolds. They discover that the villa dates from the very first days of the Roman occupation. Amongst their new finds is an entire, untouched Roman water course.

1998 Series, Episode 05 - Deya, Mallorca, Spain.

Time Team goes abroad to tackle one of its most challenging sites. They search for evidence of one of the most enigmatic cultures in the world on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The Beaker people flourished in Europe around 4,000 BC, but there is very little evidence of their civilisation, which is thought to have made the first use of metal. This Iberian island was home to the 'Beaker Folk' between 2500 and 1300 BC. The team is able to help archaeologists already working there by bringing technical expertise and new equipment - and to look at some astroarchaeological theories.

1998 Series, Episode 06 - Aston Eyre, Shropshire.

A medieval gatehouse and Old Hall are about to be turned into a luxury home. A plan of the cathedral in the archives gives its exact location. This turns out to be of no help - but they find the ditch system round the monastery instead.

In this episode, the 'Time Team' are in Worsall, near Middlesbrough. The archaeology fanatics have just three days to solve the mystery of why the population of a medieval village disappeared into thin air. Excavations of this deserted medieval village produce evidence of houses, crofts, roads, lanes, a church and a manor house, with evidence that the site was probably occupied as early as the 10th century. The site has now been scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
